Our friend Walt Wilkins has recently released Streetlight, a solo effort which draws on the formidable talents of his wife, Tina Mitchell Wilkins, Bill Small of the Mystiqueros, and talented friends Bart De Win, Ron Flynt, Kelley Mickwee, Zac Wilkerson and Michael Hearne. Diving deep into the warm waters of soul and gospel, it stands with his finest work.
“I Cried” kicks it off, a classic Wilkins meditation on the darker side of love, followed by “Ease on Down to the River”, a sultry invitation to frolic in the limestone waters of the Texas Hill Country. The title tune, “Streetlight”, co-written with Darden Smith, is another invitation, this time for life-long love. “Now There’s You” and “When You Walk In” tread further into the realm of good and honest love, painted with soaring gospel riffs and honeyed harmonies dipped in country soul. A bit of a new direction for Mr. Wilkins, and very fine stuff indeed.
